The meaning of the name
ILEPU Senior School draws its name from a layered vision of human growth. In Samburu, ilepu means "arise" or "ascend", the image of the sun rising at dawn: steady, luminous, life-giving. It's a name that calls the school toward continual growth, in character, intellect, and purpose.
ILEPU is also an acronym: Integrity, Learning, Excellence, Peace, and Unity, the values that shape everyday life at the school and build a disciplined, inclusive community.
Philosophically, the name reflects education as ascent: in the tradition of Plato, where the learner turns from ignorance toward truth; and in the thought of Augustine of Hippo, where the person is drawn inward and upward toward wisdom and truth. Together, these strands describe a community dedicated to forming young people who are continually rising, in intellect, in integrity, in responsibility toward others.
The Samburu world
Samburu County is a semi-arid land home to pastoralist communities who live off livestock, in a fragile balance with an increasingly uncertain climate. It's in the Samburu language and culture that the name ILEPU has its roots, and it's here that the school will rise, in service of the community that hosts it.

A school in two phases
Many families in the area live far from the nearest school: parents bring their children to school by motorbike, losing time and money every day. Younger children often don't get a guaranteed meal, and the distance along the way also exposes them to the risk of kidnapping.
That's why we decided to start here: ILEPU's first phase will be a nursery school, built to answer a concrete community need right away. Development will then continue with the senior secondary school described in the masterplan below.
Why school changes everything
Across the Samburu, Pokot and Turkana communities, many girls are still married off as children and subjected to female genital mutilation. School is one of the few concrete ways to break that cycle: ILEPU exists in part for this reason, to offer a real alternative to girls exposed to this risk.
What we're building
Once the first phase is underway, ILEPU will continue with a modern, solar-powered senior secondary school under Kenya's CBC/CBE curriculum. It will be the first school in the area to offer all three national senior-school pathways under one roof.
The land has been ours since 2024. In the meantime, we've already completed a hydrogeological survey to identify the best spot on the land for a borehole, the first technical step before construction itself begins.
At full capacity, it will serve about 405 students across Grade 10 to Grade 12 (135 per grade, in classes of 45), choosing between:
- STEM, science, technology, engineering, mathematics
- Social Sciences
- Arts and Sports Science
The masterplan includes: 9 flexible classrooms and an administration block; biology, chemistry and physics laboratories; a computer lab and ICT infrastructure; technical and electrical workshops; an agriculture area with a greenhouse; a Home Science complex with a training kitchen, restaurant and textile room, teaching real vocational skills; a library and research center; a music department and a fine arts studio; a full sports complex, football pitch, basketball, volleyball, handball and tennis courts, and a swimming pool; a multipurpose hall for assemblies, exams and performances; a dining hall and kitchen; and staff housing.
The whole campus is designed to run primarily on solar power, with rainwater harvesting and water-conservation systems built in from the start, plus universal accessibility standards throughout, so every student can move through campus safely and independently.
