Lessons learned in Samburu
ILEPU grew out of years of work in Samburu County: from the Irene School in Maralal, the first school we supported, to accompanying, with Nielimishe Foundation, students from the Kakuma refugee camp through to graduation. Every experience taught us the same lesson: the projects that really work are the ones shaped together with the community that lives them every day, not brought in from outside.

ILEPU School: the next step
A school serving the community, from the community, for the community.
ILEPU is the school complex we're building in Samburu County, designed together with the local community and developed in phases. We'll start with a nursery school: today many families live far from the nearest school, parents bring their children by motorbike, losing time and money, younger children don't get a guaranteed meal, and the distance exposes children to the risk of kidnapping along the way. Once this first phase is underway, we'll continue with the senior secondary school, to offer an education that's high quality, sustainable and as free as possible, open to students from the area and to those coming from contexts like Kakuma.
We've already bought the land and completed the hydrogeological survey to find the best spot for a borehole. Before construction can start, though, we need to fence the property: to protect it from wildlife, like elephants, that could damage future work, and to set clear boundaries.
